Arvind Kejriwal bail :The Supreme Court of India has granted bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the excise policy case. The decision came on Friday after Kejriwal challenged his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the matter.
Arvind Kejriwal Bail: A Milestone for AAP
Kejriwal becomes the third leader from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to be granted bail in this case, following the release of Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh. He had already received interim bail in a separate money laundering case filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
Supreme Court’s Verdict on the Excise Policy Case
A bench led by Justice Surya Kant and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan had reserved its decision on September 5, after hearing petitions filed by Kejriwal. The Delhi CM had filed two petitions: one challenging the denial of bail and the other questioning the legality of his arrest by the CBI in the excise policy case.
The Supreme Court, while granting bail, stated that Kejriwal’s prolonged imprisonment was “an unjust deprivation of liberty.” However, the bench acknowledged that the CBI’s arrest of Kejriwal on June 26 was lawful and followed all procedural norms.
AAP’s Reaction: “Satyamev Jayate”
Following the Supreme Court’s decision, AAP took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), posting “Satyamev Jayate” in celebration. Sunita Kejriwal, the Chief Minister’s wife, also reacted by congratulating the AAP family for standing strong during the ordeal. She expressed hope for the swift release of other AAP leaders still under investigation.
Conditions Imposed by the Supreme Court
Justice Bhuyan, while setting the conditions for bail, prohibited Arvind Kejriwal from entering the Chief Minister’s office or signing any official documents. Kejriwal agreed to these terms, which mirror the restrictions imposed during his bail in the ED’s money laundering case.
