Neeraj Chopra : India’s star javelin thrower, Neeraj Chopra, secured his place in the men’s javelin throw finals at the World Athletics Championships 2023 in Budapest, Hungary, after finishing at the top in the qualifying round on Friday.
Neeraj’s Stellar Performance in Qualifying Rounds
Competing under cloudy conditions, Neeraj made an impressive mark on his first attempt by achieving his season’s best throw of 88.77 meters. This performance surpassed the automatic qualifying mark of 83.00 meters. However, the 25-year-old Indian athlete failed to match his initial success in his subsequent two attempts.
Setting New Standards
Remarkably, with his throw of 88.77 meters, Neeraj surpassed the entry standard for the Paris 2024 Olympics. The qualification window for track and field athletes for the Paris 2024 Olympics opened on 1st July 2023, with the men’s javelin throw entry standard set at 85.50 meters.
Achieving the entry standard is only a part of the Olympic qualification process. The final decision on the selection of an athlete for the NOC team for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games rests with the respective National Olympic Committees.
Neeraj Chopra Record-Breaking Journey
The Tokyo 2020 champion and silver medalist at the 
2022 World Championships, Neeraj Chopra holds India’s national record with a throw of 89.94 meters. He had earlier registered his previous season’s best throw of 88.67 meters in May during the Doha Diamond League.
Neeraj’s Reaction to the Qualifying Round
Following his qualification for the finals, Neeraj commented, “I had some good throws during the warm-up, and I was confident that I would advance from the first round itself.”
He further shared, “I will give it my all in the World Athletics Championships final scheduled for Sunday.”
